Can I convert my laundry into a bathroom?

01

In our experience, converting even the smallest laundry spaces into functional bathrooms is feasible in most cases. However, the renovation's constraints depend on the property type. For houses, constraints are generally minimal, primarily involving redirecting plumbing and introducing water connections for fixtures. In some older homes the laundry is situated at the back of the home, constructed with clad or weatherboard material, modifying the structure while ensuring structural integrity and weatherproofing is achievable.

Challenges may arise in apartment blocks, particularly those with units located above others. To create convenient layouts with toilets or showers within the laundry space, redirecting in-slab plumbing becomes necessary. Although challenging, it's not impossible. We've successfully converted laundries into fully functional bathrooms in such scenarios and, in a few instances, retained the laundry function alongside the new bathroom.

I need a laundry, should I have it near or in my kitchen?

When considering the layout around the kitchen area, situating the laundry adjacent to or near the kitchen can be a practical arrangement, particularly in homes without an existing laundry, such as older apartments where it might sometimes end up within the kitchen space.

The rationale behind this proximity stems from the nature of activities in the kitchen, often prone to spills and requiring frequent cleaning. As the laundry typically houses cleaning supplies, its proximity to the kitchen can offer convenience. Additionally, kitchens, usually distanced from bedrooms due to cooking-related noise and smells, hence the laundry, with its washing machines and dryers, are more suited to be located away from sleeping areas, especially on Sunday mornings.

How much space do I need for a laundry addition in my apartment?

03

In apartments with shared laundry facilities, many owners seek the convenience of having their private washing space. Even with a modest area of just over 1 square meter, it can accommodate a functional laundry with a practical sink and sufficient bench space between the washer and dryer.

Many apartments opt to just include a washing machine in the kitchen instead of the space for the dishwasher. With clever design there will always be a better way to ensure a usable and separated laundry space.

The optimal configuration relies on thoughtful design considerations. We encourage you to meet with us to explore how we can craft both spacious and compact, yet always functional and elegant laundries that meet your specific needs and preferences.
